July 10: Top-Seeded Satchidanand Soman of Nagpur beat Amardeep Tiwari of Aurangabad in the Maharashtra State Selection chess tournament organised by the Bombay Chess Association at the Bhosale Sports Complex, Andheri, on the opening day today.

But Fide-rated 7th seed Prathmesh Mokal of Pune and 15th seed Prasad Ghate suffered shock defeats to Ravishekar Kashelkar of Mumbai and Ashish Gupta of Amravati respectively.
