Netherlands winger Arjen Robben spoke of his delight after scoring the winning penalty to end the Dutch shootout jinx as they beat Sweden 5-4 on penalties and reached the Euro 2004 semi finals on Saturday.
Robben struck the winning penalty to settle the shootout after the match finished 0-0 at the end of extra time.
‘‘It was the moment of my life in such a big tournament but I was very confident and thought I would score. It’s over now but it was very exciting and now it’s one big party,’’ Robben said. ‘‘Finally we won a penalty shootout. Today we fought until the end, stayed positive and finally we won.’’
Robben paid tribute to Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, who saved a penalty by Sweden’s Olof Mellberg to give the young winger the chance to seal victory.
‘‘Edwin stopped Mellberg’s penalty fantastically,’’ Robben said. ‘‘We didn’t play a very good match and in the end we were a little bit lucky.’’
