MUMBAI, October 3: Mumbai spinners Sairaj Bahutule and Rajesh Pawar did what their famed counterparts in the Rest of India camp failed to - bowl a nagging line - on a helpful Wankhede Stadium track. It resulted in Rest staring at a follow-on in the 34rd edition of the Irani Trophy at the end of the third day's play today. At close, Rest were 213 for six, needing 60 more runs to avoid the follow-on. The last recognised batsman, Nayan Mongia, was extending the fightback authored in the company of Sridharan Sharath (59: 154b, 189m, 9x4) earlier, to remain unbeaten on 49 (173b, 236m, 5x4). Aashish Kapoor (8) was holding fort at the other end.The Rest tally would have been worse but for the face-saving 102-run association for the sixth wicket between Sharath and Mongia. The duo came together to forge the alliance when Bahutule and Pawar had triggered a middle-order collapse. Three wickets fell without the addition of a run and Rest were in deep trouble at 90 for five.Gagan Khoda and nightwatchman Venkatapathy Raju had earlier thwarted the Mubmai bowlers to post 52 runs for the second wicket after resuming the day at 22 for one. The defiance that lasted almost two hours into the day, was broken when Bahutule managed to induce Raju (21) into playing a defensive prod into Amol Muzumdar's hands at silly point.Khoda, who appeared headed for a big score judging by the authoritative shots he indulged in, didn't last long after losing Raju. He played all over a Pawar delivery to find the woodwork in disarray. Khoda's contribution in a Rest total of 90 was 59 (106b, 145m, 8x4).In between, Bahutule had prised out Vangipurappu Venkata Sai Laxman (1), caught in the close-in cordon to leave the Rest in a tight spot. And when Pankaj Dharmani (0) drove uppishly to Muzumdar at cover, the leggie had logged an impressive analysis of 13-5-18-3.The Mumbai hopes of achieving further success was denied by Sharath and Mongia, who played out the second session without any fuss. The 25-year-old Tamil Nadu batsman, Sharath, was the more enterprising of the two, using his feet against the spinners to hit some elegant cover-driven boundaries. With Mongia at the other end content in dropping anchor, the association flourished. However, a rare error in judgment by Sharath, saw him spoon a skier to Amit Pagnis at mid-on off Pawar.Rest would have been in an even more embarrassing situation had Wasim Jaffer and Sanjay Manjrekar shown more alacrity immediately after Sharath's exit. Jaffer was guilty of not going full stretch forward to grab an uppishly driven shot by Mongia when the batsman was on 37 in the side's total of 193. Then Manjrekar, at first slip, found a Kapoor slash kissing his outstretched hands when the batsman had made only four. The bowler to suffer on both occasions was the 18-year-old Pawar, who was the most impressive of all the Mumbai bowlers on display.SCOREBOARDMUMBAI (1st innings): 473REST OF INDIA (1st innings): (overnight 22-1) Gagan Khoda b Pawar 59 (106b, 145m, 8x4); Navjot Sidhu b Mhambrey 5 (6b, 13m, 1x4); Venkatapathy Raju c Muzumdar b Bahutule 21 (77b, 99m, 2x4); VVS Laxman c Pagnis b Bahutule 1 (24b, 26m); Pankaj Dharmani c Muzumdar b Bahutule 0 (3b, 6m); Sridharan Sharath c Pagnis b Pawar 59 (154b, 189m, 9x4); Nayan Mongia batting 49 (173b, 236m, 5x4); Ashish Kapoor batting 8 (32b, 48m); Extras: (lb 1, nb 10) 11; Total: (for six wickets, in 94 overs, 386 mins) 213Fall of wickets: 1-17 (Sidhu), 2-69 (Raju), 3-90 (Khoda), 4-90 (Laxman), 5-90 (Dharmani), 6-192 (Sharath)Bowling: Mhambrey 12-4-33-1, Agarkar 16-3-40-0, Bahutule 31-9-60-3, Patel 9-2-18-0, Pawar 25-5-51-2, Muzumdar 1-0-10-0
