CHENNAI, DEC 27: G K Moopanar was today re-elected president of the Tamil Maanila Congress at the party’s general council meeting here.
The exercise marked the culmination of the second organisational elections of the party, floated in 1996.
Addressing the general council after his election, Moopanar, who was elected to the office for the second term, stuck to the party’s stand that alliance partners should share power in the event of the front being voted to power in the coming Assembly elections in the state.
Moopanar said Tamil Nadu, in tune with rest of the country, was moving towards a coalition era. No single party could fulfil the aspirations of the people, he said adding that TMC should take this into account, before evolving its stand for the Assembly polls slated early next year.
Stating that people of the state did not want just a change of government, but a total change in the system of governance, he said TMC firmly believed that an election mandate was just a permit given by voters to the political parties to fulfil their expectations and not to vest powers in individuals.
Moopanar said TMC wanted to face the elections in alliance with like minded parties, who had faith in secularism, on the basis of a common minimum programme.
He said the parties, which formed part of `Secular Front’ in the state, should come forward to float an alliance to fullfil the expectations of the electorate.
