NOVEMBER 19: Newly promoted side Mumbai Port Trust went down fighting 1-3 to fancied Western Railway in the opening match of the 14-team Bombay Hockey Association Super League at the Mahindra Stadium, Churchgate, today.

The other 12 teams in the fray are: Air-India, Tatas, Indian Navy, Mumbai Customs, Central Railway, Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), Maharashtra State Police,, Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers, Young Sports, Companeroes, Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Bank of India.

The game got off to a fine start with Western taking the lead in the very second minute through spearhead Mukhtiar Singh. Their joy, however, was short-lived as MbPT restored parity a minute later through a field goal by inside-left Mumtaz Ahmed.

Western then regained the attacking reins and made it 2-1 in the tenth minute through inside-right Chanderpal Singh who scored a field goal. The rival defences held sway thereafter and neither of the teams could add another goal. The half-time score stood at 2-1 in Western’sfavour.

In the second-half, MbPT were clearly the better side. They began their quest for the equaliser in right earnest and pressurised the Western defence in a sustained manner right through the half.

The Western defence, in which Callistus D’Souza stood out, withstood the pressure well. But MbPT missed sitters through Leonard Pereira and Mumtaz Ahmed before Western goalkeeper Sanjay Rathi brought off a fine save following a neat deflection by inside-right Digvijay Naik.

Western netted their third goal in the 69th minute through a stroke. Mukhtiar scooped to the roof at the left of MbPT goalkeeper Jehangir Shaikh.
