As the authorities at M S University (MSU) consider installing CCTVs in Girls’ Halls of Residence, some students staying in hostels have raised their voices against this.

The students have argued that how would the varsity ensure the privacy of the girls after installing CCTVs.

While no written statement has been submitted to the university authorities as of now, student leaders are taking note of this issue very seriously.

A student from one of the hostels said: “Installation of CCTVs is a good measure, but girls have their own privacy and freely move around in the hostel. The university authorities should ensure that CCTVs are not misused and are installed at the right places.”

She added: “We have shown our concern regarding this issue and have also communicated the matter to the Chief Warden, D P Bharambe.”

While the Halls of Residence authorities were not available for comment, Amita Mistry, Vice-President, MSU Students’ Union, said: “The decision for installing CCTVs has not been finalised as of now. The Chief Warden will consult the varsity authorities as well as the students before a final decision is taken.”
