State-run Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) has reported a 47 per cent increase in net profit to Rs 206 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2007, over the corresponding period last year. The company’s total quarterly income, however, decreased by 13.07 per cent to Rs 1,386.07 crore from Rs 1,594.51 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.
MTNL chairman and managing director (CMD) R S P Sinha said that if the figure of Rs 350 crore accrued as other income is taken out from the fourth quarter figure and the declining tariff scenario is considered, the revenue would have been higher.
The increase in net profit can be attributed to the decrease in operational expenses, he said.
