NAGPUR, Nov 14: A swindler, aged 65, who married a girl from the city after pretending to be a NRI businessman and later disappeared with her money, was arrested by Ranapratap Nagar police recently.

The suspect had married another girl at Bangalore and relieved her of cash worth Rs 1.2 lakh, police said. He is supposed to have duped other girls too.The suspect, Premnath Haridas Kashyap, a resident of Mathura, was arrested when he appeared before a local court to seek bail.

According to the police, Jayashri Umale, an educated girl from the city, had placed an advertisement in local newspapers seeking an NRI groom. Kashyap, who happened to read the ad, approached the Umale family pretending to be an NRI based in the States with a prosperous business. He also managed to keep the Umales in the dark about his parents and family background.

Kashyap got married to Jayashri in August this year. Their marital life was, however, short-lived. Claiming that his travellers’ cheques were lost in transit along withhis travel documents and passport, Kashyap managed to extract Rs 35,000 from the Umales for procuring duplicate documents and left for Delhi, leaving his wife behind.

It took long for Jayashri and the Umales to realise that they had been conned.

Left with no option, the Umales lodged a complaint against Kashyap with Ranapratap Nagar police. On the basis of a few telephone numbers provided by Kashyap to Jayashri, police traced the addresses at Delhi and succeeded in arresting Kashyap.
