The Jammu and Kashmir Government has ordered a high-level judicial probe into the ‘‘custodial murder ’’ of a 22-year-old groom Tahir Hassan in Tujar Sharief in north Kashmir. Hassan, an Army informer, who accompanied a Rashtriya Rifles unit last Thursday — his wedding night — to a militant hideout, was returned dead in a landmine blast.

Meanwhile, the situation in north Kashmir continued to be tense after police lathicharged hundreds of stone-pelting protestors in Sopore.

Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed who visited Hassan’s family at Tujjar Sharief today said that his government will ‘‘neither accept nor cover up human rights violations’’. Earlier, Divisional Commissioner Parvez Dewan had ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. Sources reveal that the Army chief too have sought details of the incident.

‘‘I have ordered a judicial probe to investigate this unfortunate incident. We will not spare the culprits,’’ Mufti said. ‘‘We have made it abundantly clear to the Army, para-military forces and the police to ensue protection of the innocents while they deal firmly with the militants. This probe will unfold the truth,’’ he said. ‘‘We don’t even approve of such inhuman treatment even to the militants, not to speak of innocent civilians’’.

Mufti also announced that the young widow and the younger brother of Hassan would be given government jobs.

Mufti was accompanied to the village by his daughter and the president of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party Mehbooba Mufti who consoled the young widow. She later lashed out at the army while addressing the gathering. ‘‘I am ashamed of such an unfortunate incident. Kashmiris are becoming the victims of gun of militants as well as security forces. Gun is, however, no solution to the problem,’’ she said.
