Facing a CBI enquiry into allegations of him and his family owning assets disproportionate to their known source of income, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh today met Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, Rajya Sabha Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and President APJ Abdul Kalam. He complained that the Congress leadership was trying to misuse the probe ahead of the crucial Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.
Alarmed by the CBI’s promptness in initiating the probe, which was directed by the Supreme Court, Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh alleged that the Congress had a hand in hastening the investigation process. Singh, who accompanied Mulayam to all the meetings, accused the Congress of preventing the CBI from acting independently in a similar case involving ally Lalu Prasad.
Singh also expressed fears that the investigation report could be misused by the Congress. Mulayam and Singh demanded an independent investigation into the charges by a retired or sitting judge, thereby ensuring it was free from any manipulations by the Congress headed government at the Centre.
Both the leaders also submitted an audio cassette containing an alleged conversation between a journalist and petitioner Vishwanath Chaturvedi, on whose plea the court directed an enquiry, to the President, Speaker and the Vice-President. Alleging that the petitioner was a Congress agent, Singh said the conversations in the tape contained derogatory references against apex court judges, which amounted to contempt of court. He sought the attention of the public in this matter. He added that the conversations in the cassette were “very serious” in nature. Both leaders wanted the tape to be sent to the Central Forensic Laboratory in Hyderabad for authentication.
Earlier, before the two leaders met the President and the Vice-President, the Parliamentary Board of the Samajwadi party met at the residence of party leader Janeshwar Mishra to chalk out a strategy about raising the issue in Parliament. Later, while speaking to reporters after their meeting with the President, Singh said the party will raise the matter in both Houses of Parliament and seek clarification from the government on the issue. The party has already disrupted Parliament over the issue and more disruptions cannot be ruled out.
