Mulayam keeps everyone guessing on N-deal stand

Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav has kept up suspense over his party's stand on supporting the UPA.

Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav on Friday kept up suspense over his party’s stand on supporting the UPA government on the Indo-US nuclear but threw enough hints that it may not be averse to warming up to Congress on the issue.

For the record, he maintained that none from the Congress has talked to him on the nuclear issue but his replies to questions on why he was being seen as soft on Congress were countered with attack on others like the Mayawati government.

The role of Samajwadi Party, which has 39 MPs, is viewed with great interest in case of withdrawal of support by the 62-member Left Front in the Lok Sabha if the government goes ahead with the nuclear deal.

“We will make our position clear on the nuclear deal after UNPA meet scheduled on July 3 in New Delhi”, Yadav said when asked repeatedly on Samajwadi Party’s stand over the deal.

“Why are you insisting on this question? Maybe the issue (Indo-US nuclear deal) is resolved on June 29 itself in a meeting of UPA coordination committee”, Yadav said.

“I have even not seen the document on nuclear deal. How can I comment on it”, Yadav added.

Asked whether SP was considering to support Congress led UPA government, Yadav said that none of the congress leaders have contacted him for the support on Indo-US nuclear deal so far.

On the issue of rising inflation too, Yadav did not utter a word against the UPA government but said the prices have gone up in Uttar Pradesh with the implementation of VAT by the present state government.

When asked about his ‘soft stance’ at a function in Delhi on the Emergency imposed during Indira Gandhi regime, Yadav retorted that in Uttar Pradesh more than one lakh cases had been imposed on people, mostly SP workers.

“The situation here is worse then Emergency where only SP workers are targetted and the number of cases lodged are more than that during Emergency. After the Loksabha election results the state government will be ousted like the Congress lost power after the Emergency”, Yadav said.

Asked about the possibility of his meeting with CPI(M) leader Prakash Karat, who was here today, Yadav said that Karat would have come for his party meet and ‘we did not meet today’.

“We keep on meeting frequently and held discussions with Karat only day before yesterday in New Delhi”, Yadav said.

Terming government’s action against Sahara Shahar complex as Mayawati’s ‘love for grabbing land’, Yadav said that Mayawati’s action had come as a shock among industrialists and no one would prefer to come to UP to meet the similar fate.

“Senior officers were themselves supervising the demolition drive against Sahara Shahar”, he said adding that “he had never thought of such a situation in UP”.
