
Rejecting UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav’s charge of tapping Samajwadi Party’s general secretary Amar Singh’s telephone, the Congress said here today that it did not behove the Samajwadi Party chief to make imaginary allegations. Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi termed Mulayam’s claim ‘‘irresponsible and wild’’ and maintained that it was not the first time he and Amar Singh had alleged telephone tapping.
Regarding Amar Singh’s apprehension that he may be framed in a sting operation, Singhvi said he could respond it only through a Hindi saying – ‘‘Chor ki daari mein tinka.’’ When reporters pressed him for an elaboration, Singhvi said even he wished to know what was the basis for the this apprehension. ‘‘He is trying to throw a protective shield around himself,’’ Singhvi said.
A reporter pointed at Amar Singh’s allegation that two recent TV sting operations were the handiwork of IB, Singhvi pointed out “He has since retracted from this statement on the camera.’’
Ridiculing his charges against Congress president Sonia Gandhi, he said it was unfortunate that ‘‘without any basis, names are being mentioned.’’
When asked about the emergence of a group of non-Congress parties within the United Progressive Alliance, the Congress spokesman said, ‘‘As far as Congress is concerned, there is no question of existence of such a group.’’ ‘‘These words,’’ he maintained, ‘‘had been used by others.’’
Having said this, Singhvi said, ‘‘anyone who has a constructive suggestion to strengthen the UPA can make it to Soniaji and the Prime Minister.’’About discomfort of TRS chief and Labour Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao over a lack of forward movement on Telengana statehood demand, Singhvi said, ‘‘his views on the issue are well-known.’’
A reporter asked him when would the decision come. Singhvi responded, by saying, ‘‘no time-limit can be set for solving such complex issues.’’
