Ammonia leakage: 19 hospitalised

Nineteen persons were taken ill following leakage of ammonia gas from a junk-dealer’s storage compound at Jari-Miri at Andheri (west). Police said that the affected persons including two women have been admitted to the Rajawadi hospital in Ghatkopar (E). However, they are out of danger now, according to hospital sources. The incident took place at 11.45 am in the Amarsagar Market compound. The Saki Naka police station are further investigating into the mishap.

Illegal rly tickets sale: 4 touts held

Four touts were nabbed during a raid near the Andheri public reservation service (PRS) counters on Sunday, a spokesperson for Western Railway revealed.

The raid was conducted following a complaint by a traveller who later acted as a decoy helping WR authorities bust the racket. The brain behind the racket was Mushtaq Afzal Said (32), whom the complainant contacted to buy two II class sleeper reserved tickets from Mumbai Central to Jammu Tawi on an additionalpayment of Rs 150 per ticket.

WR officials nabbed Mushtaq and his associates when they handed over the illegal tickets.

4 robbers remanded

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate K H Holambe-Patil on Monday remanded four persons who were arrested on charges of robbery and planning a major dacoity to the police custody up to August 6.

The accused were nabbed while planning a big robbery at Ghatkopar. Further investigations were in progress.

Arjun Singh visits Wahid’s residence

Senior Congress leader Arjun Singh on Monay visited the residence of slain Bombay Aman Committee (BAC) chairman, Wahid Ali Khan and offered condolences to the bereaved family members.

Singh, chief of AICC minority cell, also met Muslim leaders during the day.

Khan, a social and political activist, was shot dead at his office at Swastik Chambers in Crawford market on July 23 by some unidentified gunmen. He was a member of a Muslim delegation that met Singh on July 22.

Solar eclipse: Team to visitIran

A group of amateur astronomers from India will go to Iran to view the total solar eclipse of the century and millennium. Noted astronomers — Dr Bharat Adur and Aadil Desai — will lead the team of astronomers to Iran. The team will camp near Isfahan at Najafabad which is on the centreline having totality of one minute and 47 seconds.

The observers will witness the total solar eclipse in one of the best observing sites with respect to weather since it will be cloudy in India. There will be polarimetric studies of the solar corona in collaboration with the Belgium-based Trans European Coronal Observing Network (TECONET). Photography of the eclipse with infra-red filters and films will also be done besides normal white light photography.
