MUMBAI, July 31: Enraged by constant demand for money from a criminal, a mutton shop keeper attacked him with a knife and killed him on the spot yesterday at Crawford market in South Mumbai. Police said Mohammad Subhan Shaikh alias Shafi Blade (26) had demanded Rs 200 from a mutton shop keeper Shaukat Ali Rashid Ansari. When Shaukat Ali did not yield, Mohammad Subhan beat him and left the place. He again came after some time and picked up a quarrel with Shaukat Ali demanding the same amount.

This time angered Shaukat Ali attacked Mohammad Subhan with knife in his neck. While Shaikh died on the spot, the police have arrested Shaukat Ali.

Gawli gang member held

Kisan alias Grihnya Chandrakant More (22), a member of the Arun Gawli gang, was nabbed by the Dahisar police earlier in the week. More, wanted in a large number of extortion cases, was also involved in the sensational murder of his associate Pradeep Sonawane in Pune.

Acting on a tip-off a trap was laid by police constable Bagi Devendra Parshram at Dahisar. During interrogation More said that he was a close associate of Raju Batata who is at present in jail custody in connection with the murder of M L C Ziauddin Bukhari.

More, a former resident of Kumbharwada, ran an extortion racket in Nagpada. He also admitted to supplying arms to sharp shooters. He admitted to have taken shooters Sunil Parkar, Kirit Parmar and Manoj to Pune at the instance of Raju Batata and killed their own associate Pradeep Sonawane.

Dharna for women’s rights

Action Committee Against Atrocities on Women will organise a dharna on August 6 at different places through out the state to protest against the humiliation of a dalit woman at Karanja in Wardha district in the aftermath of police firing at Ghatkopar.The action committee was constituted after the Jalgaon sex scandal by over 35 organisations working on women issue.
