Mumbai’s winning run in the Twenty20 cricket tournament finally came to a halt on Friday after Maharashtra defeated the Ranji Trophy champions by two runs at the Brabourne Stadium.
In another match played later, all round-performance by Yusuf Pathan (52 and 4 for 22) and a five-wicket haul by Sankalp Vohra proved instrumental in Baroda’s 33-run win over Saurashtra.
With Mumbai chasing 139, they needed eight runs from the final over off medium-pacer Srikkanth Mundhe. With the duo of Hiken Shah and Iqbal Abdulla looking settled, Mumbai would have hoped for a win. But Shah ran himself out while taking a single, and that put the breakers on the chase.
Earlier, with opener Prashant Naik, Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma departing with the team at 39, the Mumbai top-order looked brittle. A 92-run fourth wicket stand between Vinit Indulkar and Hiken Shah put them back on track.
Brief scores: Maharashtra 139/6 in 20 overs (P Desai 25, R Motwani 24) beat Mumbai 137/6 in 20 overs (H Shah 53, V Indulkar 39; J Patil 2/18).
Baroda 143/9 in 20 overs (Y Pathan 51; S Natkan 2/12, K Makwana 2/12) beat Saurashtra 110 all out in 15.5 overs (C Pujara 31; S Vohra 5/22, Y Pathan 4/22).
