
Talent contest
The Lions Club of Bombay (Vijaynagar) had recently organised a talent contest for secondary school students of the K-east ward, comprising Andheri east, Vile Parle east and Jogeshwari east. About 18 schools participated in the contest, and there were 126 participants in all for the essay-writing, elocution, light vocal music, classical singing, classical dance and folk dance competitions. The distribution of prizes will take place during the Heritage of India festival on February 8, 1998.
Guidance camp
Achanak Kreeda Mandal, Colaba, recently organised a three-day SSC Guidance Camp for Marathi medium students to prepare them for the forthcoming SSC Board examinations, to be held in March 1998. BJYM leader Vineet Kanchan and the President of Achanak Kreeda Mandal, Suhas Parab, were the main organisers of the show.
Protest
The Akhil Bharatiya Janwadi Mahila Sanghatana has described the Shiv Sena-BJP government’s decision to describe 1998 as `Women’s Year’ and the announcement of a new Woman’s Policy as “yet another attempt to attract women voters in the general elections.” In a press release, the organisation pointed out that the new policy is being announced without the tabling of a proper report on the action taken by the government so far.
Appointed
Microsoft Corporate recently announced the appointment of Rajiv Nair as the Regional Director of the company’s India Subcontinent region. Nair, who was formerly the managing director of the region, will replace Sanjay Parthasarthy, who will now be posted at the Microsoft’s Redmond, WA, headquarters.
Awards
Eminent economist Prof Gangadhar Gadgil presented the Udyogshree Awards-97 to 12 entreprenuers for their business excellence at a function held in Mumbai on Saturday. The award carries a trophy and certificate of honour. The function was sponsored by Gadre Steel Works.
