Most wanted gangster held

MUMBAI, November 19: One of the `seven most wanted’ gangsters in Thane was arrested by a special squad of Mumbai police at Ghatkopar on Wednesday evening. Krishna Sambaji Ghag (31), a key associate of gangster Suresh Manchekar, was trapped at Bhatwadi, Ghatkopar (W). He was on his way to extort a huge ransom from a local businessman, said the police. Around 3 pm, Ghag was seen near a bus stop at Bhatwadi and was asked to surrender.

Instead, he took to his heels and tried to escape through the narrow lanes amidst the chawls in the neighbourhood. He was cornered after a hot chase by over 10 cops. He has been remanded to police custody till November 24.

Vashi dealers arrested

Two wholesale traders of tur dal and masur dal in the APMC market in Navi Mumbai were arrested on Wednesday night following a raid by officials of Controller of Rationing department. The action was taken following complaints that the traders had stocked dals in excess of their licencedquota. The trader duo, Vasant K Chheda and Nanji Kalyanji Nikhalani, were arrested by the APMC police at their shops in sector 19 at Vashi.

ITWF threatens global action

The president of International Transport Workers’ Federation, Umraomal Purohit, has threatened to organise protests in front of consulates and embassies where a labour unrest is dealt with harshly. Purohit, a veteran unionist, is the first Asian to be elected to the 102-year-old federation which has 125 member countries. He announced the federation’s plan to coordinate agitational programme in the member countries so that local problems get international attention. Purohit was dismissed from service within 15 days of joining for participating in a strike in 1946.

Fellowship on photography

B S Sundaram, leading photographer, has been awarded the fellowship of the Photographic Society of India for his ouststanding contribution and services to photography in and around Bangalore. Only five persons have been selected for thisaward from all over the this year. Sundaram had also won the fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain.
