MUMBAI, October 23: A degree college student of M H Saboo Siddiqui College of Engineering was physically assaulted by some diploma students yesterday at the college campus.

At about 3.25 pm, some diploma students of the college, who already have a rowdy reputation, allegedly attacked Dalvi with bamboo rods and bricks for standing up to them. He has lodged a complaint with the Nagpada police.

“For the last three-four years, these boys, some of whom are ex-students, have been acting aggressive. Anybody who tried to stand up to them would be immediately squashed,” said a student of Construction Engineer department.

The principal of the degree college, Dr A M Chara when contacted dismissed the incident as a `minor matter’. He said the college would institute a probe.

MSEB workers

The state government has decided to pay the class III and IV employees of the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) an ex gratia of Rs 2500. Announcing this yesterday the chairman of MSEB P L Gajaralwal, has appealed to the representatives of the various employees union to end their two day long strike and resume duties.

Akademi awards

The Sangeet Natak Akademi has announced the 1996 awards and three fellowships to 27 artistes, including renowned vocalist Gangubai Hangal, Kathakali exponent Ammannur Madhava Chakyar and well-known theatre personality Habib Tanvir. General council of Akademi met on October 22 and declared the awards.
