V M Muthuramalingam, Chief Commissioner of Income-tax, Mumbai said there is no question of extending the time limit for Voluntary Disclosure Income Scheme (VDIS) by even a minute beyond the midnight of December 31.

In a press release, he said those who desire to avail of VDIS can do so up to the midnight of December 31. Tax, which, for any reason, could not be paid before filing the declaration, can be paid within 90 days from the date of filing the declaration along with interest due as prescribed.

The RBI has also issued instructions to the SBI, its associated banks, and nationalised banks to keep cash counters open beyond banking hours on December 31 to cope up with the anticipated rush of assessees/declarants for tax payment. In case of large deposits which cannot be counted on the same day, cash will be accepted by banks subject to verification later.
