Ashwin Naik gang member succumbs to bullet wounds

MUMBAI: Ashwin Naik gang member and notorious extortionist from Tardeo, Dinesh S Jathar alias Abu, succumbed to bullet injuries at the Nair Hospital on Saturday morning. Two unidentified assailants, suspected to be members of Arun Gawli gang, had shot at Jathar on Friday afternoon, while he was standing in front of his chawl. Family members brought Jathar’s body to his residence, where more than a 100 people had assembled. Jathar was said to be Ashwin Naik’s right hand man. No arrests have been made so far in connection with his killing.

WR suburban services affected

Suburban services on the Western Railway (WR) were disrupted on Saturday afternoon after the Mumbai Central bound Karnavati Express suffered a locomotive failure at Virar at about 12.35 pm. Local trains were delayed by over 15 minutes till late afternoon, before another locomotive was sent to Virar for hauling the Karnavati Express. Sources in the operating department of the Western Railway said the locomotive failed midway near Virar. Shuttle services between Virar and Dahanu were also disrupted, causing inconvenience to outstation passengers.

Indo-China deal on engineering The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IME) has signed an agreement of cooperation with the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society. Under this agreement, there will be continuous interaction and exchange of information between the two societies. The two societies will organise regular technical programmes and joint seminars in India and China for the benefit of mechanical engineering professionals. The agreement was signed on November 18 at Shanghai, China. As a first step in this direction, a one-day seminar was organised on November 18, ’97 in Shanghai, with the theme `Advances in Manufacturing Technology and Automation’. IME is also looking forward to organising joint programmes in India by inviting experts in mechanical engineering from China.
