OCTOBER 31: A brace by striker Abhishek Yadav enabled West Zone runners-up Mumbai University to storm into the finals of the All-India Inter-zonal inter university football championship at Nehru Stadium, Margao, today.According to information reaching here, Mumbai outplayed Calcutta University 4-0, after leading 1-0 at half time, to make their maiden entry into the final.
Mumbai started with a full steam from the word go and drew first blood in the 21st minute through Yadav. The second half was totally dominated by Mumbai, who consolidated their lead again through Yadav in the 53rd minute. The third goal was a self-goal. A shot taken by Yadav hit the Calcutta defenders and went into the net. Shrikant Nayak sealed the fate of Mumbai scoring a fourth goal for his team in the 77th minute.
Mumbai will meet Madras University in Tuesday’s final. Madras defeated West Zone champions Laxmibai Institute of Physical Education 3-2 in the other semi-final.
Mahindras supreme
Mahindra and Mahindra defeatedTata Sports Club 1-0 in the final of the J Kosalraman Memorial Veterans football tournament at St Xavier’s ground, Vile Parle, today. The match-winner was scored by Pratap Shiva Gawand, who beat Tata goalkeeper Bandya with a neat placement, following a through pass by Iqbal Hussein.
Surendra Kumar of Tatas was adjudged best player, while the Fair Play trophy was bagged by Western Railway.
Match abandoned
The MDFA Division I play-off football match between Khalsa Gymkhana and Bad Boys Club was abandoned due to fading light at St Xavier’s ground, Parel, today.
Khalsa were leading 1-0 through a goal by Sandeep Kamble. The match will be replayed tomorrow at 1.30 p.m.
In another match, DBYC A beat MLWB, Andheri 6-4 via the tie-breaker (2-2). Suresh Aela, John Ferbanses, Namdeo J, B Dias, Johnny Dias, and Ashish Patel netted for DBYC. The goal scorers for MLWB were Sheldon Nunes (2) and Aldrin D’Souza (2). In a Division II match, Bosco Strikers beat Wall Boys 1-0. Macy D’Silva was thegoal-getter.
Bipin camp inaugurated
Former international right-winger and National coach Dereyk DeSouza inaugurated the 13th Bipin Memorial Football Association winter coaching camp for boys and girls under-16, co-sponsored by Central Bank and Ambuja Cement, at Sacred Heart school, Santa Cruz, yesterday afternoon. About 600 trainees attended.
Olympian SS Narayan, Dereyk D’Souza and Ratnakar Shetty will visit the five centres and help the coaches.
