MUNGER (BIHAR), JAN 18: The Bihar Government has drawn up an ambitious plan to repair and beautify the decaying Munger fort, built during the reign of the Pala kings more than 1,200 years ago.

State Director of Archaeological Department Ajay Kumar told UNI here that the fort had been declared a protected monument and hence needed to be maintained.

According to historical documents, the 8,600 feet-long fort was built by King Jarasandha of Magadh and was called the Jarasandha Kila.

Historian Dr Buchanan, however, claims that Hoseyn Shah, one of the greatest kings of Bengal, who had extended his dominion on both sides of the Ganga river, had built the Munger fort.

The picturesque position of the fort had also been described by a traveller H Beveridge who said few things were more beautiful or impressive than to sit on a moonlit night on one of the fort’s bastions and listen to the Ganges lapping against the foot of the rampart.

District Magistrate S C Mishra said the authorities were convertingthe moat of the fort into a beautiful spot for tourists.
