Muslims supported makeshift Ram temple head priest’s nomination

Muslims had proposed and seconded nomination papers filed by the head priest of the makeshift Ram temple, Baba Satyendra Das, for Assembly polls from here. This led to angry reactions from VHP-supported saints. They said any person seeking election with the support of the UDF and Maulana Imam Bukhari would adversely affect the Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case pending in the court and the priest’s “sympathy” for Muslims “may pose hindrance” in administrative work. The nomination of Das was, however, rejected.

YC president attacked, held

NEW DELHI: A cavalcade of the Indian Youth Congress was allegedly attacked by SP workers and the local police near Deoria and its president Ashok Tanwar arrested on Saturday. Tanwar is touring the state for the past 28 days. Tanwar’s cavalcade was on way to Deoria from Salimpur. “A number of IYC office-bearers have sustained serious injuries in the attack and have been arrested and taken to Deoria jail. As per the latest reports, the president of Tamil Nadu Youth Congress is missing following the attack,” IYC spokesperson Madhumita Chakraborty said.
