The issue of non-bailable warrants (NBWs) pending against some of the MLAs may snowball into a major controversy again during the Winter Session of Orissa Assembly (starting November 1) as the state government is yet to submit a list of such legislators to Speaker Maheswar Mahanty.

Mahanty had directed the state government to furnish the list during the Budget Session of the House. The issue had retained centrestage during the last session of the Assembly, following the Speaker’s ruling that MLAs and ministers having NBWs pending against them cannot enter the House. Minister for Women and Child Development, Pramila Mallik, had to resign when Opposition Congress raised the topic in the House. Higher Education Minister Arun Dey avoided attending the Assembly for several days during the session, till he obtained bail in cases in which NBWs were pending against him.
