JAMMU, March 28: Senior leaders of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee charged the National Conference with indulging in “political opportunism” by deciding to abstain from voting on the confidence motion faced by the Vajpayee government.

“The NC and its leaders believe in political opportunism. It has no faith in its political ideology and can go to any extent for the sake of the power,” said a joint statement issued by six senior Congress leaders criticising the NC’s decision to abstain from voting and to extend issue-based support to the BJP-led government. The leaders called the change of stand “a betrayal of the faith of the people of Jammu and Kashmir who believe in secular politics.”

The leaders said that BJP’s stand on abrogation of Article 370, and “anti-Muslim” policies has been NC’s frontal attack against BJP. “The overnight change of tone by the NC for the sake of power was sheer political dishonesty and shallowness,” the statement added.
