NOV 1: The army has followed the navy and the air force’s example in taking the decision. The step is expected to enhance recruitment, particularly in the officer stream in the army.

According to the army’s own internal assessment, it is facing a shortage of almost 13,000 officers and the gap is increasing every year causing concern among top brass.

At its 40th meeting held on Wednesday, the Committee approved conversion of 81 soft non-military stations to hard non-military stations. It was felt the measure will not only result in financial savings to the government but also meet the long felt demands of personnel posted at these stations. The step would entitle service personnel on deputation with NCC to get separate accommodation along with educational and medical facilities.

Director General of NCC Lt.Gen.A.S. Rao told the Committee that according to the direction of the Defence Minister it has been decided to raise the strength of the NCC cadets from 12 lakh to 13 lakh this year. The Air Force and the Navy have agreed to allow NCC cadets for attachment training in their respective units which was restricted to the Army, General Rao added.
