The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), has welcomed a former convict to its fold as a district-level office-bearer. The new general secretary of North Mumbai district, Dhananjay Shetty, served a prison term of 10 years.

According to police records, Shetty was convicted for the murder of gangster Uday Patole in 1992 and was released about two months ago. He was considered very active in MIDC, Jogeshwari, Goregoan and Dindoshi areas before his arrest.

Sources say that Shetty would look after the NCP’s revival in areas between Jogeshwari and Borivali where banners have already come up welcoming the new secretary.

Mumbai NCP president Chandrakant Tripathi, when contacted, said he was not aware of the appointment. ‘‘I don’t know about Shetty’s appointment since it is done at the district-level,’’ Tripathi said.
