The BJP-led NDA Government has handed out a sop to its new-found ally, the AIADMK, one that it can go to town with.

It is learnt, the Government has finally taken a decision to allow Jaya Television to start its news and current affairs channel.

Jaya TV has been lobbying hard to get its news and current affairs on air for most part of last year — a decision not easy to come by as the Home Ministry had raised objections about alleged FERA violation by proprietor T.T.V. Dinakaran who also happens to be the brother of AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa’s foster son Sudhakaran.

Since October last, when the Home Ministry had refused licence, Dinakaran has stepped down in favour of his wife. A Jaya TV official confirmed today his company had applied for permission to start a news channel. I&B officials said there was little reason to doubt the credentials of the broadcaster as it seemed to have fulfilled the conditions required to uplink the channel from the country.
