AMRITSAR, Feb 16: The seventh Jawaharlal Nehru SAIL hockey tournament will be held at the Guru Nanak Dev University astro turf from February 19 to March 1 here.

This tournament will be conducted by the Jawaharlal Nehru Hockey Tournament Society, New Delhi in collaboration with Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi and GND University. Twelve champion universities from different zones of the country, plus one each from Pakistan and Sri Lanka will participate in the tourney.

The winners will get Rs One Lakh, the runners up will receive Rs 60,000 while the third placed team will get Rs 40,000.

There will also be individual prizes.

Gursharan for Brunei
Chandigarh: Gursharan Singh and Grish Natu, both of India, are among ten international umpires who have been selected to umpire matches in the World Grand Prix Badminton finals to be held at Brunei from February 24 to 28, according to Rajinder Kalsi, secretary of the Punjab Badminton Association.

Only top 16 players of the world are eligible to take part in the World Grand Prix. Gursharan Singh is working as senior badminton coach with the Punjab Sports Department. He is posted at Sangrur.

Ian McDowell (Australia), Lkiu Xiaoafeng (China), Bjorn Von Veh (Finland), Cholid Magad (Indonesia), Chan Chun Seng (Malaysia), Rob Taconis (Netherlands), Eddie Ang (Singapore) and Vachara (Thailand) are the other umpires selected by the International Badminton Federation.

Jaswinder shines
Kurukshetra: Jaswinder Singh was declared the DAV College, Pehowa sportsman of the year after the annual sports day of the college today.

The Flying Sikh, Milkha Singh was the chief guest on the ocassion.

Punjab volleyball
Patiala: Ludhiana (boys) and Jalandhar (girls) won the 16th Punjab State Junior volleyball championships held here recently. Ludhiana beat Patiala 21-25, 25-21, 25-19 and 25-22 in a tense boys final while Jalandhar prevailed 25-20, 21-25, 25-18 and 25-19 over Hoshiarpur in the girls final.

Jaspreet Singh (boys-Patiala) and Palvinder Kaur (girls-Jalandhar) were the best players in their respective categories.

The Punjab Finance Minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh distributed the prizes.
