Former Chief of Nepal Army staff, Gen (retd) Pyar Jung Thapa was on Sunday stopped from flying out of the country with his wife. He was stopped at the Tribhuvan International Airport while boarding a Qatar Airlines Flight to London to attend a ceremony at Sandhurst.

However, the Home Ministry officials said they have no clue as to why he was barred from flying abroad. “We have no idea who has ordered this.”

“The Commission of Inquiry into Abuse of Authority which interrogated Gen Thapa twice in the past had asked him to be present for further questionning a month later, but he wasn’t instructed not to leave the country.”

Thapa has been accused of playing an active role in suppressing the people’s movement last year. His support was instrumental in enabling King Gyanendra seize power and impose an authoritarian rule for 15 months.
