The FBI has proposed that broadband Internet providers be forced to wire their circuit in a way to support easy wire-tapping by intelligence services, a media report said on Saturday.

If accepted, it would require all broadband providers, to rewire their circuits within 15 months and outlaw the introduction of new broadband services that do not support easy wiretapping.

Cnet online news service, specialising in technical news, said FBI had submitted the proposal to the Federal Communication Commission, saying the importance and urgency of this task cannot be overstated. The proposal, says Cnet, has the backing of American Department of Justice and the Drug Enforcement Administration. —(PTI)
