PUNE, Feb 22: An independent water supply scheme for the 17 newly-merged village areas in Pimpri-Chinchwad, is being contemplated by the municipal corporation. The scheme, to be implemented on Built Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis, envisages provision of water by bringing it through closed pipe-lines from the Pavana dam.

According to municipal commissioner Ganesh Thakur, the State Government has given its consent to the corporation for lifting 100 MLD (million litres per day) water from the dam. The scheme is independent from phase two of the 114-MLD water supply scheme which is expected to be completed by May this year.

Significantly, this year the corporation will also be initiating work to raise the height of bund at Ravet to increase live water storage in the Pavana river. The height of the bund will be raised to level that will guarantee availability of raw water for at least thirty days. A serious need to increase the water storage was felt in the last week of December, as the corporation faced an emergency situation when the irrigation department, at a short notice, announced that the release of the water from the Pavana dam needed to be curtailed for completing work on a Kolhapur type weir near Somatne. The draft budget for the year 1999-2000 has made a provision of Rs 21 lakh for the work.

The civic budget has made a provision of Rs 14.02 crore for developmental works in the new villages. Some of the other features of the budget and the financial provisions for the works are:

  • Corporation to begin ambulance service for road mishap victims (Rs five lakh).
  • Work on common effluent treatment plant for industries to be expedited.
  • Provision of Rs 2.99 crore for computerisation and training to employees.
  • Unique “Nakshatra Udyan,” a garden with the theme on planetary positions, to be developed at Pimpri Waghere, survey number 175.
  • Provision of Rs 20 lakh for administrative reforms for getting ISO 9002.
  • Intensive cardiac care unit, and intensive care unit to be opened for providing treatment at concessional rates to needy patients.
  • Bhakti-Shakti and Chapekar Memorial projects to be completed by next year.
  • Power generation from garbage, production of organic manure, and tree plantations by land-fill method to be implemented at Moshi garbage depot.
  • Construction of sub-way proposed at the congested Chapekar chowk at Chinchwad.
  • Desilting work to be initiated in Pavana river with the assistance of the College of Military Engineering.
  • Toy train projects to be completed at Nehrunagar rose garden, and at Premlok Park Chinchwad.
  • A children’s park to be developed near the proposed planetarium project near Nehrunagar.
