Ashwani Kumar, IPS officer of the 1973 batch (Himachal Pradesh cadre), on Saturday took over as the new Director of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), India’s premier investigating agency. Kumar, who succeeds Vijay Shankar, is the 24th Director of the CBI after its formation in 1963.
Kumar has an experience of 35 years in policing and six years of experience in the CBI. Before joining as CBI Director, he was DGP, Himachal Pradesh.
Speaking to the media after taking charge today, Kumar said: “CBI, with a history of 67 years, is a professional organisation and it will strive to fulfill the task mandated to it.”
Kumar said that every year the CBI chalks out an annual plan and works on it. “This year too, the annual programme of work had been decided on January 1, the CBI is carrying out the tasks chalked out,” he said. Kumar assured that the motto of the CBI — Industry, Impartiality and Integrity — would be followed in letter and spirit and as the new Director, he would strive to take the CBI to greater heights.
Later, Kumar addressed senior officials at the CBI headquarters and said that he hoped every officer and staff would cooperate with him in carrying out the tasks assigned to them.
