The change of government at the Centre has started a flurry of activities in IIM, Calcutta too.

The IIM-C faculty which filed a case in the Calcutta High Court challenging the legality of the March 24 meeting of the IIM-C Board, has decided to write to the HRD Ministry, the Board chairman and director, to end all illegal appointments to the Board.

‘‘We have expectations from the new government,’’ P.K. Sett, a prominent member of the faculty council told The Indian Express in an exclusive interview. ‘‘We will ask the Ministry not to make any appointments which violate the rules of the Memorandum of Association of IIM-C, and is thus illegal. The earlier regime brought in some ‘hooligans’ and we don’t want them. We are requesting the chairman not to allow such persons to participate in the meeting,’’ Sett added.

Meanwhile, two of such ‘‘illegal’’ members, S.K. Dube and P.D. Chitlangia on Sunday said they were not going to quit the Board and would abide by the new government. ‘‘I am not going to resign on my own but if the new government wants me out, I will quit,’’ said Dube, who is also director of IIT Kharagpur.

‘‘I am a government nominee so my job is to see that the government’s interest is served. If the government wants the fees to be Rs 30,000, I will support it. But if the government wants it to be Rs 1.50 lakh, then too I will support it,’’ he added.

He expressed hope that the CPI(M), which was behind the new government, would favour a fee-cut. ‘‘The Marxists are for social justice and I hope they will favour a fee-cut,’’ he said. Meanwhile, P.D. Chitlangia, another member and a noted industrialist of Kolkata said that he saw no reason why he should resign. ‘‘If the new government asks me to resign, then I will resign. My view is fees should be cut so that poor students can get admission to the IIMs,’’ he said.
