Subhash Joshi, the new Uttarakhand Director General of Police (DGP), in a bid to give a new look to the police force and check the misuse of police uniforms by criminals and terrorists, has decided to not only issue the personnel new smart identity cards with customised halograms but has also initiated a scheme for interaction of the force with various sections of the society at the police station level.
Police have already started giving smart identity cards to its personnel in three districts of Dehradun, Nainital and Haridwar. “With growing incidents of use of police uniform by criminals and even terrorists, these cards have been introduced to enhance security,” said V Ganpathay, Inspector General of Police (IGP), police headquarters.
DGP Joshi has also directed the state police to observe “police station visitors week” from January 7 to 13, 2007, in all the police stations of the state.
For the entire week, policemen will invite women, traders, elderly, students and even victims of crimes for a direct interaction at police stations to know the perception of the general public and help greater cooperation between the police and public.
“To be friends of the society, there is an urgent need to have better understanding between the police and public,” said Joshi.
Senior officials of the state police will also visit various police stations during the exercise.
