Charanjit Singh Atwal, Deputy Speaker, Lok Sabha, has stated that the SAD-BJP government had launched a special programme of Rs 468 crore for the construction of new link roads in the state, under which funds amounting to Rs 4 crore were being spent on the construction of 40-km new missing roads in each constituency.

Atwal was addressing a well-attended rural gathering at Koom Kallan village, 30 km from here today, organised to distribute the cheques of grants for the development works out of MP LAD quota of Sharanjit Singh MP. At the functions, cheques of grants of Rs 70 lakh were distributed among the panchayats of the villages.

Atwal claimed that during the past one and half year of SAD-BJP government, pace of development had been speeded up and special programme to strengthen the infrastructure had been chalked out, under which big projects of roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, ROBs costing more than Rs 10,000 crore had been started.

He added that the government had also accorded priority to improve the existing road network and two independent expressways were being constructed from Mohali to Jalandhar and Pathankot to Ajmer. He said that to ensure the self dependency in power, the Govt had planned four power projects of 6600 MW capacity. Out of these, work on two projects — at Talwandi Sabo of 1980 MW capacity and at Gowindwal Sahib of 500 MW capacity — had already been started. The other two at Rajpura 1500 MW capacity and at Giderwaha of 2640 MW capacity were also being taken up shortly and the state would be surplus in power within coming three years, he added.

The Deputy Speaker said that to provide excellent world class connectivity, two international airports, one at Amritsar and other at Mohali were being made operational in the state, beside three Airports for domestic flights were also being made functional at Sahnewal in Ludhiana, Bathinda and at Pathankot.

Earlier Atwal and Ajmer Singh Lakhowal, Chairman, Punjab mandi Board, laid the foundation stone of a project costing to Rs 12 lakh for the construction of village periphery at Machhian Kalan village. Atwal said that he had always started the development process from this village during his tenure as MLA of constituency considering it his own village and the people had given him a considerable lead from the village.

Ajmer Singh Lakhowal claimed that the income of Punjab Mandi board had been enhanced by 50 per cent and during this year, till date, it had recorded at Rs 508 crore against 274 crore of last year. He said that during this year, funds amounting to Rs 200 crore were being spent by the Board on the costruction of new link roads in the state.

Sharanjit Singh Dillon, MP, said that he had arranged grant of more thn Rs 50 crore for the development projects in rural areas.
