The Supreme Court on Friday directed Karnataka to furnish its response within two weeks to an application filed by Tamil Nadu seeking to restrain it from commissioning any new check dam or irrigation works in violation of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal Award of February 5, 2007. A directive in this regard came from the Bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice R V Raveendran. Hearing the brief submissions made by the Tamil Nadu Government counsel, who contended that Karnataka was trying to illegally block the flow of Cauvery waters through these check dams, the Bench issued notices to Karnataka. It recycles them and sends them back,” Additional Solicitor General Amarender Sharan remarked before a Bench comprising Justices B N Agrawal and G S Singhvi. The comments by the ASG came in the wake of a hearing of a petition filed by president of Panthers Party, Prof Bhim Singh, who alleged that several Pakistani nationals were languishing in different jails of the country for the past one decade without facing trial.
