LUDHIANA, MARCH 5: In the courtyard of ex-sarpanch Pritam Singh’s House in Chamedi, curious residents from neighbouring villages have been pouring in since morning to catch sight of an abandoned newborn boy found lying beside Pritam Singh’s field about a kilometre from the village.

According to some migrant labourers who spotted the infant two days earlier but kept quiet due to the fear of the police, the boy had been lying in the field for three days. He was found in a cardboard box, still unwashed after birth. Says Pritam Singh, "His hands had turned blue from cold. The nights are still very severe and it was raining that night. The field is infested with snakes, it is a miracle he the baby has survived."

The infant was brought to Pritam Singh’s house where he was bathed and clothed. "A doctor has had a look and the boy is doing fine. I want to make sure that someone from a good family adopts the boy. Till then we will take care of him. If we don’t find anyone suitable we will look after him," added Pritam Singh.
