The National Human Rights Commission has issued a showcause notice to the Uttar Pradesh government on why a sum of Rs 5 lakh should not be awarded as ‘‘immediate interim relief’’ to the kin of a medical student, who was shot dead by the state’s police due to ‘‘mistaken identity’’ last year.
Sonali Bose, a 21-year-old medical student, was allegedly shot by state police on the Agra-Mathura road in July last when she was returning with a friend to Agra in a car.
The NHRC had earlier asked the state Chief Secretary and DGP to submit a report of the action taken in the case. In response to the first showcause notice for immediate interim relief, the state indicated that investigation into the matter was being conducted by the CBI and thus, the outcome of the investigation is awaited for taking further action, NHRC said.
