The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) will be sending an investigation team to Dhanni Deeh village of Shravasti district in Uttar Pradesh, where members of minority community were attacked and molested on July 10. The Commission’s decision comes in the wake of a July 14, 2007 report in The Indian Express.

People belonging to the minority community were attacked by people belonging to the Hindu community on July 10, 2007. The attackers, alleged to have been patronised by a Cabinet Minister of the UP Government Dadan Mishra, also gangraped women and even paraded them naked. It was also reported that no FIR was registered in the incident.

The report further said that trouble started a few days ago when a man from the minority community in Dhanni Deeh eloped with a girl from nearby Gharmanta village. The girl’s family along with other villagers attacked the man’s relatives. The attack set off a wave of panic and members of the minority community started fleeing from the village.

The Commission has sent a notice to the Chief Secretary and DGP, UP, for a factual report within four weeks.
