November 21: Nine Shiv Sena corporators with the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) have been stripped of their posts under the Section 3(1-a) of the Maharashtra Local Self-Govenrment Act, 1986, for switching parties twice during their five-year tenure. The order was passed on November 17 by Konkan Divisional Commissioner, Sharwari Gokhale, in response to a petition filed by the Nagri Vikas Aghadi (NVA) on April 28.
The corporators, originally with the Sena, had joined the Nagri Vikas Aghadi of rebel Sena leader Ganesh Naik, who quit the party in 1998. However, they rejoined the Sena seven months ago.
They are: Devram Patil, Shatrughan Dabhade, Malati Jhore, Nandkumar Chavan, Manohar Joshi, Parvati Kotkar, Mohan Madhvi, Sunita Pingle and Madhuri Parab.Four of the nine corporators – Devram Patil, Nandu Chavan, Malati Jhore and Parvati Kotkar – are members of the NMMC Standing Committee. However, with the civic elections slated for April 20, 2000, mid-term elections to fill their posts will not beheld.
