The West Bengal police is still investigating whether national-level athlete Pinki Pramanik — arrested in Krishnanagar on Tuesday for carrying a gun in her handbag — has any connections with the People’s War.

‘‘We have not yet got anything to establish a connection between Pinki and the PW, but we are still investigating,’’ Nadia SP Benoy Chakrabarty said.

The 19-year-old athlete was arrested at the Habibpur railway station in Krishnanagar. Pinki said she found the gun in a toilet at Sealdah railway station and she kept it in her bag but police suspect that she had connections with the Naxal group. She was produced in court yesterday and remanded to police custody for two days.

West Bengal Minister for Sports Subhas Chakrabarty, however, supported Pinki. ‘‘All girls have the right to keep guns with them for self-protection. Pinki has a bright future and the police should keep that in mind while investigating the case,’’ he said.
