Mumbai police commissioner M.N. Singh has withdrawn the security cover provided to Farid Khan Shaikh, who bailed out suspected Al Qaeda operative Mohammed Afroz by paying Rs 1 lakh. Shaikh was given security cover in 2000 after his brother and chief of Aman Committee Wahid Ali Khan was shot dead by the Shakeel gang. He received threatening calls from Chhota Shakeel after he helped police nab those who shot his brother.
It is said that Shaikh used to be a police informer and played a key role in eliminating Shakeel’s network in the city and Shakeel turned against him. Shaikh says his relations with Singh turned bitter after he got involved in the Afroz affair. Singh, he claims, ticked him off for involving himself ‘‘in the Afroz matter’’ and warned him that he would be dealt with severely if he did not lay off.
