Former External Affairs minister Jaswant Singh today labelled as ‘‘fabricated’’ US Secretary of State Colin Powell’s claim, as reported in a US newspaper, that he had played a key role in a crucial phase of the India, Pak dialogue process.Singh said ‘‘there is no truth’’ in Powell’s claim that had set up a telephone conversation between then prime minister A B Vajpayee and his Pakistani counterpart Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali, leading to the current peace process.‘‘I don’t know whether the State Department of USA in addition to attempting to run US foreign policy as best as it can is also a telephone exchange,’’ Singh told reporters.‘‘The US bureaucracy are world champions in tragidity and inaction in finding reason not to do things,’’ Singh said.‘‘Powell has never spoken on the telephone ever. The way he has gone about claiming credit is a total concoction and a matter of imagination the way he conjured up biological weapons in Iraq,’’ Singh said.Singh also termed as ‘‘imagination’’ Powell’s suggestion that India and Pakistan were on the verge of a nuclear war after the Parliament attack.
