He’s probably the only winning candidate who’s not celebrating in his constituency. While still lodged in Tihar jail after being arrested as a UNLF “sympathiser” several months ago, Thounaojam Shyamkumar defeated sitting Congress MLA Salam Chandra for his first entry into the state Assembly. Shyamkumar was held by Delhi police in the company of two senior leaders of the UNLF, while boarding a flight to Kathmandu.

3 heavyweights lose

Four-time Chief Minister and last-minute MPP candidate RK Dorendro couldn’t retain his seat. Following suit was another former CM W Nipamacha Singh (RJD). Former deputy CM Th Chaoba Singh, who was forced out of the BJP under militant pressure, looked to make a comeback with the MPP, but fell short.

Close shave

MOBC minister and Congress candidate Md Allauddin Khan had a close win as he retained his seat in Keirao by a margin of only two votes over Karam Thamarjit of the MSCP
