Only three women make it to Delhi Assembly

Out of the 13 women candidates in the fray, only three have won—all are from the Congress. Besides chief minister Sheila Dikshit, Congress’ Kiran Walia and Barkha Singh have won from Malviya Nagar and R K Puram respectively.

Out of the 13 women candidates in the fray, only three have won—all are from the Congress. Besides chief minister Sheila Dikshit, Congress’ Kiran Walia and Barkha Singh have won from Malviya Nagar and R K Puram respectively.

The BJP’s three women candidates have lost. One major upset was BJP candidate from Patel Nagar Anita Arya, who won the Karol Bagh Lok Sabha seat in 1999, but lost this time.

“My family voted for the Congress, but I voted for Anita because being a female she was more concerned about the safety of women,” said Udita Chopra a resident of West Patel Nagar.
