LEH, JUNE 21: Jammu and Kashmir Government has allotted land to 27 war widows and dependents of those soldiers who fell fighting the Pakistani regulars during Operation Vijay and five Gallantry award winners in Leh district.

The plot of land each measuring one kanal (5,445 square feet) was handed over to the war-widows and others at a simple function on Tuesday, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Leh T Angchok told reporters here.

As a gesture of goodwill to the people of Kargil, the theatre of Pakistani misadventure and the war, some of the beneficiaries also include from Kargil area, Angchok said.

Among those who have been allotted the plot are a Vir Chakra winner and two Mahavir Chakra winners. The allotted land belongs to the Leh Hill Development Council and each plot is valued at about Rs 1.15 lakh, he said.

The Leh district administration has already ear-marked 150 kanals of land to establish a war widow colony in the district, the ADC said.
