KEY BISCAYNE, MARCH 21: Leander Paes moved into the second round of the $4.6 million Lipton Tennis when he beat American Jeff Salzenstein 6-4, 6-3.
The 125th-ranked Paes, who made it to the main draw of the championships as Romania’s Dinu Pescariu withdrew in the qualifying rounds, skillfully warded off the challenge yesterday despite a nagging wrist pain.
The Olympic bronze medallist had won the $50,000 Singha Thailand Open Challenger tournament in Bangkok earlier this month. Mahesh Bhupathi will team up with Paes for the doubles where they have been seeded fourth.
