Pakistan’s business community has welcomed the Supreme Courts ruling allowing President Pervez Musharraf to seek a second term in uniform, and urged the Opposition parties and lawyers to respect the judgement.

Contrary to the intense divisive debate among other segments of the Pakistani society, the business community has given a positive response to the apex courts verdict hoping it would ensure political stability and continuity in government policies.

Businessmen could not comprehend the opposition to the ruling by the anti-Musharraf political parties and the lawyers particularly when the judiciary has been widely accepted to have become independent since the restoration of Chief Justice Iftikhar M. Chaudhry.

President, Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Majyd Aziz said the verdict has ended political instability to some extent and if the Presidential elections were held peacefully, it would further help in the continuation of economic policies.

“Opposition parties should accept the decision wholeheartedly as the judiciary enjoys independence and is giving verdicts on merit,” Majyd was quoted as saying by the Daily Times newspapers on Saturday.

“Any protest and agitation which turns to dangerous proportions has a negative fallout for the economy, so it is imperative that better sense prevails so that economic activity is not derailed,” another businessman was quoted as saying.

The business community was apprehensive that the threat of resignation by members of the All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) from the national and provincial assemblies if carried out could increase political instability in the country.
