WASHINGTON, May 19: Pakistani Foreign Minister Gohar Ayub arrived here last night on a three-day visit of the United States during which he is expected to brief the Clinton administration on the May 12 Gujral-Sharif meeting in Male.
He was present in Male when the prime ministers of India and Pakistan had their first bilateral contact in four years, the two leaders were in Male in connection with the summit of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).
The US administration has welcomed the resumption of high-level dialogue between the two South Asian rivals. The President himself had said that “the United Sates is encouraged” that Prime Minister Sharif alongwith his Indian counterpart I K Gujral, “has committed to working to resolve the issue which for so long have divided Pakistan and India.”
